Fondato nel 1952 da William Carr e Arthur Pack il Sonora Desert Museum si estende per oltre 98 acri ed è universalmente riconosciuto come uno dei migliori progetti per la conservazione di quel meraviglioso ecositema ( piante e animali) che è il Deserto di Sonora nell’Arizona Meridionale. Museo, “zoo” naturalistico, giardino botanico e acquario, il Sonora Desert Museum contiene più di 2700 animali ( fra cui puma, cani della prateria, serpenti a sonagli, linci, coyotes, svariati tipi di uccelli e insetti) ed oltre 1220 tipi di piante endemiche. Una ricchezza di biodiverisità che attrae ogni anno mezzo milione di visitatori che qui imparano a conoscere ed apprezzare ( anche grazie alle numerose guide del museo che forniscono spiegazioni davvero esaurienti) un mondo davvero unico. Attraverso una tranquilla passeggiata di oltre 3 km, chi visita il museo viene a contatto con un ambiente incredibile ed è difficile non subire il fascino del deserto e delle sue meravigliose creature. Il museo ha inoltre varie iniziative regolari ( anche in lingua spagnola) fra cui un Junior Docent Program, e l’emozionante Raptor Free Flight ( da metà ottobre a metà Aprile) dove si assiste al volo di varie specie di rapaci. Situato a 19 km ad ovest di Tucson, il Sonora Desert Museum è dotato di vari negozi fra cui due ottimi ristoranti/coffee bar.

A vast wealth of biodiversities that attracts half a million visitors every year who come to learn and appreciate (thanks to the many museum guides who provide very complete and thorough explanations) a unique world. Along a very peaceful 3 km walk, visitors to the museum come into contact with an incredible environment and are delightfully charmed by the desert and its amazing creatures. The museum also hosts a number of regular events (also in Spanish) among which a Junior Docent Program, and the thrilling Raptor Free Flight (from mid-October to mid-April), where one can witness the flight of various species of birds of prey. Located 19 km West of Tucson, Sonora Desert Museum has a variety of shops including two great restaurant / coffee bars.
